The cold climate in winter in Washington DC or New York City is primarily due to their northern latitudes. These cities are located in regions that experience colder temperatures during the winter months because they are farther away from the equator, where the sun's rays are less direct. Additionally, cold air masses from the Arctic can move southward, bringing frigid temperatures to these areas. The proximity to bodies of water, such as the Atlantic Ocean, can also contribute to the cold temperatures by allowing for moisture to be picked up and create snowfall or freezing conditions. **

The state of Washington was named after George Washington, the first President of the United States, in honor of his leadership and contributions to the country. The decision to name the state after George Washington was made in 1853, when it was still a territory. The name was chosen to show respect and admiration for the founding father and his role in shaping the nation. Additionally, the name was also a way to distinguish the territory from the city of Washington D.C., which was already named after George Washington. **
